DeepFuse: A Deep Unsupervised Approach for Exposure Fusion with Extreme Exposure Image Pairs

We present a novel deep learning architecture for fusing static multi-exposure images. Current multi-exposure fusion (MEF) approaches use hand-crafted features to fuse input sequence. However, the weak hand-crafted representations are not robust to varying input conditions. Moreover, they perform poorly for extreme exposure image pairs. Thus, it is highly desirable to have a method that is robust to varying input conditions and capable of handling extreme exposure without artifacts. Deep representations have known to be robust to input conditions and have shown phenomenal performance in a supervised setting. However, the stumbling block in using deep learning for MEF was the lack of sufficient training data and an oracle to provide the ground-truth for supervision. To address the above issues, we have gathered a large dataset of multi-exposure image stacks for training and to circumvent the need for ground truth images, we propose an unsupervised deep learning framework for MEF utilizing a no-reference quality metric as loss function. The proposed approach uses a novel CNN architecture trained to learn the fusion operation without reference ground truth image. The model fuses a set of common low level features extracted from each image to generate artifact-free perceptually pleasing results. We perform extensive quantitative and qualitative evaluation and show that the proposed technique outperforms existing state-of-the-art approaches for a variety of natural images.Comment: ICCV 201

Few-Shot Domain Adaptation for Low Light RAW Image Enhancement

Enhancing practical low light raw images is a difficult task due to severe noise and color distortions from short exposure time and limited illumination. Despite the success of existing Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) based methods, their performance is not adaptable to different camera domains. In addition, such methods also require large datasets with short-exposure and corresponding long-exposure ground truth raw images for each camera domain, which is tedious to compile. To address this issue, we present a novel few-shot domain adaptation method to utilize the existing source camera labeled data with few labeled samples from the target camera to improve the target domain's enhancement quality in extreme low-light imaging. Our experiments show that only ten or fewer labeled samples from the target camera domain are sufficient to achieve similar or better enhancement performance than training a model with a large labeled target camera dataset. To support research in this direction, we also present a new low-light raw image dataset captured with a Nikon camera, comprising short-exposure and their corresponding long-exposure ground truth images.Comment: BMVC 2021 Best Student Paper Award (Runner-Up). System of crop intensification for more productive, resource-conserving, climate-resilient, and sustainable agriculture: experience with diverse crops in varying agroecologies

    Get PDF
With continually increasing demand for food accompanied by the constraints of climate change and the availability and quality of soil and water, the world’s farmers are challenged to produce more food per hectare with less water, and with fewer agrochemical inputs if possible. The ideas and methods of the system of rice intensification which is improving irrigated rice production are now being extended/adapted to many other crops: wheat, maize, finger millet, sugarcane, tef, mustard, legumes, vegetables, and even spices. Promoting better root growth and enhancing the soil’s fertility with organic materials are being found effective means for raising the yields of many crop plants with less water, less fertilizer, reduced seeds, fewer agrochemicals, and greater climate resilience. In this article, we review what is becoming known about various farmer-centred innovations for agroecological crop management that can contribute to agricultural sustainability. These changes represent the emerging system of crop intensification, which is being increasingly applied in Asian, African, and Latin American countries. More research will be needed to verify the efficacy and impact of these innovations and to clarify their conditions and limits. But as no negative effects for human or environmental health have been identified, making these agronomic options more widely known should prompt more investigation and, to the extent justified by results, utilization of these methodologies

This paper proposes a control strategy for accomplishing reliable coordination of wind-solar-hydro energy conversion systems in islanded mode of operation. With this integrated scheme, it is viable to generate electrical power from inexhaustible resources in regions having favourable meteorological conditions with limited or no connectivity to grid. In this work, the control technique is formulated to utilize the available renewable energy sources in an efficacious manner to render power at almost constant voltage and frequency to the isolated load. The control strategy of hybrid scheme is implemented and its effectiveness is demonstrated through simulation results.by Ram J. Prabhakar, and K. Ragava

STATCOM-Based Wind-Solar-Hydro Electric Power System with Modified Real and Reactive Power Controls

This paper presents a control of distributed generation (DG) system subjected to sudden rise in demand, faults on the distribution feeder and unbalanced load condition. The effects of line to ground faults on the system are investigated and control measures are taken to stabilize the generator speed and to improve voltage quality at the point of common coupling (PCC). The static shunt compensator (STATCOM) is connected at PCC to provide voltage support during sudden demand rise and fault on feeder. Moreover, the STATCOM control is devised such that even during unbalanced load condition the converter current and hydro-turbine–driven induction generator current is balanced. Owing to this, the double power frequency oscillations in the dc-link voltage and torque pulsations in generator can be averted. The STATCOM also supplies reactive power to the load. In addition to this, generation-demand mismatch is moderated using real and reactive power controllers. To demonstrate the performance of the DG system with the said control approach, model of system is simulated in Matlab–Simulink environment and the results are presented.by J. Ram Prabhakar and K. This article proposes new power management based current control strategy for integrated wind–solar–hydro system equipped with battery storage mechanism. In this control technique, an indirect estimation of load current is done, through energy balance model, DC-link voltage control and droop control. This system features simpler energy management strategy and necessitates few power electronic converters, thereby minimizing the cost of the system. The generation–demand (G–D) management diagram is formulated based on the stochastic weather conditions and demand, which would likely moderate the gap between both. The features of management strategy deploying energy balance model include (1) regulating DC-link voltage within specified tolerances, (2) isolated operation without relying on external electric power transmission network, (3) indirect current control of hydro turbine driven induction generator and (4) seamless transition between grid-connected and off-grid operation modes. Furthermore, structuring of the hybrid system with appropriate selection of control variables enables power sharing among each energy conversion systems and battery storage mechanism. By addressing these intricacies, it is viable to regulate the frequency and voltage of the remote network at load end. The performance of the proposed composite scheme is demonstrated through time-domain simulation in MATLAB/Simulink environment.by J. Ram Prabhakar and K. Ragava

Ghosting Free HDR for Dynamic Scenes via Shift-maps

    No full text
Given a set of sequential exposures, High Dynamic Range imaging is a popular method for obtaining high-quality images for fairly static scenes. However, this typically suffers from ghosting artifacts for scenes with significant motion. Also, existing techniques cannot handle heavily saturated regions in the sequence. In this paper, we propose an approach that handles both the issues mentioned above. We achieve robustness to motion (both object and camera) and saturation via an energy minimization formulation with spatio-temporal constraints. The proposed approach leverages information from the neighborhood of heavily saturated regions to correct such regions. The experimental results demonstrate the superiority of our method over state-of-the-art techniques for a variety of challenging dynamic scenes

GHOSTING-FREE MULTI-EXPOSURE IMAGE FUSION IN GRADIENT DOMAIN

This paper presents an algorithm to produce ghosting-free High Dynamic Range (HDR) image by fusing set of multiple exposed images in gradient domain. Recently proposed Gradient domain based exposure fusion method provides high quality result but the scope of which is limited to static camera without foreground object motion. The presence of moving objects/hand shake produces a set of misaligned images. The result of gradient domain approach on misaligned images suffers from ghosting artifacts. In order to produce better HDR image without image registration, we propose to create an aligned image set from input image set by photometric calibration. The gradient of aligned image set is then used to reconstruct the fused final image. The proposed algorithm tested on several publicly available dynamic image sets shows that resultant HDR image is ghosting-free and well exposed. Additionally, the proposed method is fast and thus can be used in consumer appliances such as mobile phones, portable devices with digital cameras
